New Exploit Unveils BB Rifle Unlock in Rockstar’s Bully After Two Decades
In the last six months, one dedicated gamer has taken on the challenge of completing Rockstar Games’ 2006 open-world gem, Bully, without causing harm to any NPCs. Ironically, this pacifist mission has led him to uncover several previously unknown exploits that enable the use of some of the game’s more violent weapons outside of designated missions, including the sledgehammer, explosive football, and, as of yesterday, a rifle.
Content creator JustGarrison shared his findings on YouTube, detailing the steps needed to access the rifle in free roam. It’s important to note that while this is indeed an exploit—since Rockstar never intended for players to wield the rifle against NPCs—JustGarrison achieved this without any mods or external tools, and he confirms that the weapon can be accessed in any version of Bully.
Typically, the rifle can only be used temporarily during the shooting range minigame, but it surprisingly inflicts damage on NPCs. This suggests that the rifle was intentionally designed this way, and it’s possible that a method to use it in free roam was cut during development. However, the buggy animations and the ability to fire it during cutscenes indicate that it may have been either unfinished or that Rockstar removed its third-person assets before the game’s release.
Even though the rifle is meant to fire BB pellets, it’s understandable why Rockstar might have opted to restrict access to it outside the minigame. The implications of shooting within a school setting would likely have drawn significant media scrutiny. After all, Bully launched in 2006, just a year after the controversy surrounding the “Hot Coffee” minigame in the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Given the intense scrutiny they faced at that time, it makes sense that Rockstar would choose to err on the side of caution with Bully.
