“New Gaming Magazine Secures Funding on Kickstarter in Just 7 Hours”

Continue (stylized as CONTINUE) is the brainchild of Jackson Ryan and Mark Serrels, stepping up to address the declining video game media landscape in Australia. This print magazine showcases some of the most influential voices in Australian gaming journalism and has successfully surpassed its $18,000 Kickstarter goal.

For those outside Australia, the extent of the decline in the local video game media might not be fully apparent. While gaming journalism is facing challenges globally, Australia has experienced significant setbacks over the past five years. The reasons are complex, but it’s clear that the community is eager for quality content, as evidenced by Continue’s impressive backing of around 44,000 Australian dollars within just 24 hours.

“It’s been a brutal time for videogames. Industry-wide layoffs, studios shutting down. Games writing has suffered, too. We’ve watched on as our favourite outlets disappear — or worse, transform into AI slop factories,” Jackson notes on Continue’s Kickstarter page. “It feels bleak. It feels like there’s no light at the end of this very dark tunnel. But we believe audiences love great games writing. So we don’t want to give up.”

The inaugural issue of Continue will feature contributions from some of Australia’s most prominent voices, including Alanah Pearce, Ruby Innes, Ally McLean, James O’Connor, Ben Armstrong, and others, with opportunities for new writers to join in as well. Aspiring contributors can submit their ideas through a pitch form to get involved.

Additionally, the project is set to expand beyond print, as Ryan and Serrels plan to launch a dedicated website, continuemagazine.com, now that the Kickstarter has exceeded its AU$40,000 goal. With a month still remaining in the campaign, there’s an opportunity for supporters to contribute and help fund the second issue in advance.
