New GOG leadership believes success lies in offering unique advantages over Steam: “If we provide a superior version of a game that promises longevity, players will choose us.”
Michał Kiciński, co-founder of CD Projekt and GOG, now the proud owner of the DRM-free digital storefront, understands that taking down Steam is a tall order—but that’s not his goal.
GOG’s managing director, Maciej Gołębiewski, shares insights, noting, “Going after a giant like that is risky,” emphasizing the need for agility. Kiciński believes GOG’s strength lies in its quality games and dedicated user base, which will attract more players as they recognize its value.
“I think we have a strong foundation as a company,” Kiciński states. “We deliver solid results, have a respected brand with clear values, and our customers are loyal.” While he acknowledges that this might not be enough to sway someone away from Steam, Kiciński prefers to focus on GOG’s ability to offer high-quality, classic games rather than compete directly with Steam’s vast and varied library.
“If there’s a version of a game on GOG that stands out as superior and promises longevity, people will take notice,” he explains.
He adds, “We want to encourage players to consider, ‘If you have the choice to buy a game rather than just rent it, and you value owning your favorite classics, then GOG is the place for you. If that’s not a priority for you, then Steam might be the better option.'”
In the meantime, Steam titles that utilize generative AI have generated $660 million, with popular games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Stellaris leading the charge as studios increasingly embrace this technology.
