New Lego Cities: Skylines Game Possibly Revealed Ahead of Summer Game Fest

A new Lego city builder? Another expansive open-world title from Sony? Or perhaps a relic from 2012’s development struggles trapped behind DRM? As we dive back into the gaming scene post-holiday break, let’s kick things off with a fresh roundup.

It’s being dubbed “one of the best tweets ever.” Essentially, Donald Trump’s nearly complete peace plan with Iran has turned out to be as substantial as the rumored Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer that keeps circulating online. Over the weekend, an alleged gunman was spotted near the White House, but the real buzz was all about a new meme that emerged instead.

The Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea has updated its listings, revealing a title called “Lego Skylines” from Paradox Interactive. This unannounced spin-off or expansion for the city simulation franchise might be gearing up for a reveal at Geoff Keighley’s upcoming Summer Game Fest showcase in LA next week.

The ratings board also included entries for previously announced titles like Persona 4 Revival and something intriguingly named Fortnite: Endgame. The timing hints that release date announcements or surprise drops could be just around the corner for these games.

A developer from Media Molecule dropped a hint about the studio’s next project on their LinkedIn profile, which was spotted by an outlet. They listed “feature owner, main contact/vision holder of various open-world content” in their current role, mentioning points of interest and other map features.

Other job postings suggest that this upcoming game will be a new IP rather than a continuation of the Sackboy series. Former Creative Director Mark Healey hinted that it will be “more of a game than a creative tool,” unlike the studio’s previous project, Dreams.

Jean-Charles Gaudechon, a former EA executive and now head of a Finnish game company, emphasized the need to rethink how they approach their IPs as franchises. He mentioned the importance of growing the community and how their partnership with Annapurna aims to elevate their games and reach new audiences. He expressed disappointment that titles like Alan Wake and Control didn’t achieve greater sales.

He believes that adaptations of the expanding Remedy-verse will contribute to that growth.

According to Paul Tassi, the news about an unexpected cancellation of an upcoming expansion was mostly kept under wraps within the studio. Only those reassigned to work on Marathon or new projects were aware of it.

Currently, access to the game is impossible due to DRM. Its tumultuous development and shifting scope make it a fascinating case study in how content was altered or removed during the final stages of production.

The publisher’s newly established Elsewhere Entertainment subsidiary in Europe may be working on an open-world RPG, based on some recently uncovered job listings. One posting indicates a focus on PvE experiences, with responsibilities including developing a cohesive vision for engagement systems, seasonal content, progression, mission design, encounter design, and RPG systems.
