New Lego SpongeBob Set Lets You Build a Pineapple Under the Sea

After 15 years, Lego is finally bringing back a SpongeBob SquarePants set. While the new playset announced today looks decent, the accompanying SpongeBob Brickhead is more reminiscent of a bizarre creature from Roblox than the beloved animated sponge known for being absorbent, yellow, and porous.

On July 14, it was revealed that Lego is releasing a new SpongeBob set, marking the first since 2009. Fans of both SpongeBob and Lego have been eager for new sets based on the iconic series, but it seemed like the licensing was previously tied up. Now, SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick are making their return to Lego this September, complete with new minifigs that feature fresh parts and accurate colors.

The upcoming 1,794-piece Bikini Bottom set includes the main homes of all three characters as depicted in the show. It looks impressive and is packed with intricate details for fans to enjoy, though the $220 price tag feels a bit steep for what is essentially a delicate playset. Now, let’s talk about that Brickhead:

What on earth is happening here, Lego? I don’t dislike Brickheadz; I have several Star Wars characters displayed proudly on my shelf and have enjoyed many other designs over the years. Yet, this SpongeBob Brickhead is a major letdown. And I’m not the only one feeling this way.

“How do you mess up a SpongeBob BrickHeadz LMAO,” one user commented on BlueSky. Another on Twitter quipped, “They turned him into a fridge.” Ouch, but it’s spot on.

He’s too tall and thin, his hands are disproportionately small, and his eyes are oversized for his head and body. I do appreciate the printed piece for his pants and tie, but that’s about the only positive I can muster. At least he’s only $13.

Both the new Bikini Bottom set and the unfortunate SpongeBob Brickhead are set to launch on September 1. Here’s hoping for more Lego SpongeBob sets in the future.
