New Sci-Fi Thriller from Resident Evil Director Casts Its Lead Actor
Zach Cregger is on a roll. Hot off the success of Resident Evil, which might just be the best video game adaptation to date, he’s already diving into his next venture: The Flood. This enigmatic sci-fi thriller, which Cregger will write, produce, and direct, has just announced its first major casting news.
Jennifer Lawrence is set to take the lead in The Flood. Known for her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series, which she’ll reprise in this year’s Sunrise on the Reaping, Lawrence is also an Oscar winner for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. The pairing of Cregger and Lawrence seems fitting, especially considering her involvement in films like 2017’s Mother and 2025’s Die My Love, both of which embrace unique cinematic narratives.
Cregger’s previous works have showcased impressive talent as well, particularly in Weapons, which boasts a star-studded lineup including Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong. Currently, Lawrence is the only confirmed cast member for The Flood. Cregger expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role.”
Details about The Flood’s storyline remain scarce, as Cregger has kept much of the project under wraps. However, he did mention to Men’s Health that it shares thematic elements with 2001: A Space Odyssey and may explore concepts of human nature and artificial intelligence, aligning with its classification as a sci-fi thriller.
We also have some insights into the film’s production team and release date. The Flood is set to be released by Warner Bros., which previously distributed Cregger’s hit Weapons. In addition to Cregger, the film is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, along with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment. Mark your calendars for August 11, 2028.
As for Cregger’s future projects, he currently has no other directorial endeavors lined up. A prequel to Weapons titled Gladys is in the works, also scheduled for 2028, but Cregger won’t be returning as director. Resident Evil has proven to be a massive hit both critically and commercially, and while there’s been no official word yet, it’s hard to believe that a sequel isn’t on the horizon.
It’s called The Flood, it’s coming in 2028, and it’s ‘maybe the best thing I ever wrote.’
