If you’re a die-hard Resident Evil fan and caught the latest Requiem trailer during the PlayStation State of Play, you likely found yourself excitedly pointing out what seems to be the return of Sherry Birkin. But there’s something else that caught my eye early in the trailer: a Licker zombie, without a doubt.
We all know Lickers start as zombies, right? According to Capcom lore, they’re infected with the same T-Virus as regular zombies, but their condition deteriorates into something much worse due to a secondary mutation from their excessive consumption of flesh, leading to their heads swelling and eventually splitting open. This is why we see various types of Lickers throughout the series, including the “evolved” versions in the original Resident Evil 2.
Interestingly, concept art from the Resident Evil 2 Remake, which can be unlocked in-game and viewed through Creative Uncut, hinted at plans to introduce creatures that were essentially zombies in the early stages of transforming into Lickers. I’m convinced these creatures are making an appearance in Resident Evil Requiem, especially based on this part of the trailer I’ve timestamped for you:
Here’s a screenshot I snagged from the trailer, along with close-ups of the official concept art:
While it may not be an exact replica, it’s clear to me that this is an adaptation of the Resident Evil 2 Remake concept art. The creature in the trailer has those distinct, glazed-over eyes that signal the zombie’s trademark blindness, sharp teeth, and if you look closely, an elongated tongue. That’s an early-stage Licker, and I stand by that.
It’s fantastic to see Sherry return, as she’s a beloved character with a rich backstory, but I’m equally thrilled to witness a new take on one of the most iconic survival horror monsters ever created. Capcom seems to be making great use of some incredible concept art that might have otherwise been forgotten. Bring on February 27!
Going hands-on with Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil Requiem has turned me into a skull-popping pro, and I can’t wait to dive back in!
