New Trailer Reveals Exciting Release Date for Ghost in the Shell Anime
Bandai Namco Filmworks has dropped a fresh batch of details about the highly anticipated anime, The Ghost in the Shell, which is set to debut on July 7, 2026. This series, crafted by Science Saru—known for hits like Devilman Crybaby and Inu-Oh—and directed by Touma Kimura (also known as Mokochan), aims to fully reimagine Masamune Shirow’s iconic cyberpunk manga, rebooting the franchise after several adaptations.
The Ghost in the Shell will stream exclusively on Prime Video globally, with the exception of China and Russia, and will also air in Japan on Kanai TV and Fuji TV’s Ka-Aniva! anime block. New episodes will be released every Tuesday at 11 PM JST, which translates to a 9 AM EST drop on Prime Video, although the exact timing for the global release is still being confirmed.
Attendees at the Annecy Animation Film Festival will get an early look at the series with an exclusive screening of the first two episodes. This special event, titled “Dive into The Ghost in the Shell,” will feature behind-the-scenes insights from director Mokochan and other key members of the creative team. This marks Mokochan’s directorial debut, following his roles as a key animator and storyboarder on Dandadan and Tatami Time Machine Blues, both produced by Science Saru.
Additionally, Bandai Namco Filmworks teased a story synopsis on X, featuring the tagline: “Wired bodies. Networked Ghosts.” Set in 2029, the series will follow Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 as they tackle intricate cyber-crimes and international conspiracies. The enigmatic “Puppet Master” is set to be the main antagonist, echoing themes from the 1995 film and the first season of Stand Alone Complex.
A striking new key visual, illustrated by chief animation director Nao Naito, was also revealed, showcasing character designs for the main cast. The artwork features members of Public Security Section 9 armed with their weapons of choice, with Motoko Kusanagi prominently displayed atop one of the beloved tachikomas (known as Fuchikoma), the iconic spider-like robots that blend humor with lethal efficiency.
The excitement for this new chapter in cyberpunk action is palpable, and thankfully, fans won’t have to wait long to dive into this thrilling future.
