New Trailer Showcases Breathtaking Visuals from Studio Ghibli Veterans’ Upcoming Film
The term “Ghibli-esque” often gets tossed around in discussions about various media, including video games. While it can sometimes be misapplied, it truly resonates when talking about *Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood*. Crafted by a team of veterans from Studio Ghibli, this film is shaping up to be one of the standout releases of the year.
*Cocoon* marks the directorial debut of Yukimitsu Ina (known for *Star Wars: Visions*) and is the first feature from animation studio Sasayuri. Founded in 2018 by Tateno Hitoma, a Ghibli alum who contributed to classics like *Princess Mononoke*, *Spirited Away*, and *Grave of the Fireflies*, the studio also boasts talents like Akihiko Yamashita and Shinji Otsuka. Recently, the North American distribution rights were secured, with a release date set for September 4. An English subtitled trailer has also been unveiled.
The emotional weight of 1989’s *Grave of the Fireflies* is particularly relevant to *Cocoon*, as both narratives share a profound exploration of hardship. The official synopsis reveals the story’s heart:
San and Mayu are students at an all-girls school on a serene island. When war encroaches, they are tasked with caring for the wounded in a concealed military hospital. Amidst the chaos and violence, the friends seek comfort in their fragile existence.
The film is based on the manga by Machiko Kyo, which draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of the Himeyuri students during the Battle of Okinawa in the waning days of World War II. Its premiere in Japan last year coincided with the 80th anniversary of the war’s conclusion, earning acclaim for its stunning yet poignant depiction of gendered violence and suffering. The animation quality is, unsurprisingly, exceptional, reflecting the high standards of Sasayuri’s talented team. As noted by Alicia Haddick, the narrative’s focus on San and Mayu’s relationship immerses viewers in their desperate struggle for survival, filled with both love and anger.
The North American release will feature both Japanese and English dubs. The Japanese cast includes Mitsushima Hikari (from *Mary and the Witch’s Flower*) as Mayu and Itō Marika as San, while the English cast details are still under wraps. Like the finest Ghibli films, *Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood* promises to deliver a powerful visual and emotional experience. Mark your calendars for the theatrical release on September 4.
What a refreshing yet nostalgic journey awaits!
