New Trailer Unveiled for Netflix’s Chilling Sea Monster Thriller, Below

Netflix has carved out a solid niche for itself with horror limited series, delivering chills whether the source of fear is a haunted house, a quiet island, or something far more enigmatic. Series like The Watcher transformed a seemingly perfect home into a nightmare, while Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass expertly blended supernatural horror with deep family drama.

Now, Netflix is diving into a much wetter setting for its next horror thriller.

A new six-episode limited series is set to immerse viewers in a small fishing town in Newfoundland, where something sinister lurks beneath the waves. Expect mysterious deaths, a bizarre iceberg, hidden family secrets, and an unidentified sea creature.

Titled Below, the series has just dropped its official trailer ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. All six episodes will be available on Netflix starting October 8.

Below centers on Calvin Penney, a determined yet kind-hearted fisherman portrayed by Josh Hartnett, who resides in a tight-knit Newfoundland community with his family. Haunted for years by the mysterious death of his father, Calvin’s past resurfaces when an unknown sea creature begins to terrorize the town.

Things take a turn for the bizarre when a massive iceberg drifts into the harbor. Despite warnings to steer clear, boats venture out to investigate, only to find that whatever lurks beneath the surface is far more perilous than anyone anticipated. As chaos engulfs the town, Calvin teams up with Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis, to uncover the truth and safeguard his family.

Calvin’s son, Wade Penney, played by Charlie Heaton, becomes increasingly entangled in the unfolding mystery. The trailer hints that the creature may be linked to the death of Calvin’s father, suggesting that the terror haunting the town has been lurking for decades.

Created by Jesse McKeown, known for work on The Umbrella Academy and The Sinner, Below weaves together supernatural horror, local folklore, family dynamics, and small-town tension. Filmed in Newfoundland and Labrador, the isolated coastal backdrop plays a crucial role in the narrative.

While the trailer keeps the creature mostly under wraps, it promises a thrilling ride filled with oceanic chaos.
