StarCraft fans have faced a challenging decade, but recent reports hint at a significant revival for the beloved sci-fi franchise. Nexon, the publisher behind Arc Raiders, has reportedly brought on a veteran StarCraft modder to spearhead a new entry in the series at its free-to-play shooter studio, separate from the long-rumored StarCraft shooter in development at Blizzard.
According to a translated report, Nexon has begun development on a new game utilizing the StarCraft IP and is actively recruiting key developers for the project, with Choi Jun-ho already on board as the lead. Jun-ho is known for creating a popular StarCraft map called “Shinpu,” though details about it are scarce in English sources. The game is being developed at the Nexon studio responsible for Sudden Attack, a free-to-play FPS series, but its genre remains unclear.
The report also speculates about a possible link between this project and the rumored StarCraft shooter from Blizzard, but that connection seems unlikely. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier commented on the report, stating, “No idea if this is true, but if so, it is unrelated to the StarCraft shooter that’s in development at Blizzard by a Blizzard team.”
Schreier was the first to report on the StarCraft shooter’s development back in 2024, which is being led by Blizzard VP and GM Dan Hay, who previously worked as the franchise lead on the Far Cry series.
While Blizzard has teased a lot of news regarding its major franchises this year, StarCraft has been noticeably absent from the announcements. However, with two new StarCraft games potentially in the works, RTS fans might have a reason to feel hopeful again—even if it seems neither title will fall under the traditional RTS category.
