Nicolas Cage Reveals He Passed on a Role in a Classic Christopher Nolan Film

Nicolas Cage recently shared in an interview that he has turned down roles from several renowned directors, including a part in Christopher Nolan’s *Insomnia*. Interestingly, these directors often don’t reach out to him again after he declines.

During a promotional appearance for *Spider-Noir* on a podcast, Cage reflected on his career. About 33 minutes into the hour-long chat, while discussing his collaboration with David O. Russell on *Madden*, he mentioned that he had previously passed on a role in one of Russell’s films, as well as in projects from other notable directors.

“[Russell is] the only director that I said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie,” Cage recalled. “Most of them, they get their feelings hurt or something and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.”

When asked about specific films he turned down, Cage confirmed it was Nolan’s 2002 psychological thriller *Insomnia* and Anderson’s *Hard Eight*. While he only briefly touched on *Insomnia*, it’s intriguing to consider how different that film, which came out before *Batman Begins*, might have been with Cage in a key role.

Cage seems like he would have been a perfect fit for either of the lead characters, Will Dormer or Walter Finch, originally played by Al Pacino and Robin Williams, respectively. Given Nolan’s tendency to work with certain actors multiple times, it’s interesting to ponder where else Cage could have appeared in Nolan’s body of work had that opportunity not slipped away.

However, Cage remains open to collaborating with directors he has previously turned down, especially after his positive experience with Russell on *Madden*. “David did call me back, and I thought that it showed a lot of class that he would call me back and invite me again,” Cage said. “And I didn’t want to say no to him again because I do have great respect for his talent, and it was a beautiful experience.”

While you won’t see Cage in Nolan’s upcoming *The Odyssey*, set to hit theaters on July 17, there’s always hope for a future collaboration. As for Cage, fans can catch him next in Prime Video’s *Spider-Noir* on May 22 or in *Madden*, which arrives in theaters on November 26.
