Nintendo announces a special Direct to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Zelda.
As we approach the end of 2026, details about the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2 remain scarce. However, it appears that Nintendo is gearing up to unveil exciting information during an upcoming Nintendo Direct dedicated to this iconic RPG and the franchise as a whole. Additionally, there’s a second Nintendo Direct on the horizon.
The first event celebrates the 40th anniversary of Zelda and is set for Tuesday, September 8. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct will kick off at 7 a.m. PDT / 10 a.m. EDT and will run for 30 minutes. Nintendo has promised a variety of updates related to The Legend of Zelda during this stream.
The following day, Wednesday, September 9, will feature a more general Nintendo Direct at the same time, lasting around 45 minutes. This presentation will highlight Nintendo Switch 2 games slated for release this winter.
After the September 9 Direct, there will be a Nintendo Treehouse: Live stream showcasing gameplay from select titles featured in the Direct. This livestream is expected to last approximately 110 minutes.
The Legend of Zelda franchise marked its 40th anniversary in early 2026, and Nintendo is going all out to celebrate. In addition to a stylish Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 console and Pro Controller, the company is also finalizing an upcoming film featuring Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Initial teasers for the Ocarina of Time remake have shown that Nintendo is giving the game a complete overhaul. Instead of the blocky graphics of the Nintendo 64 version, the new Link resembles a character from a Pixar film. It’s likely that the specific release date for the game will be revealed during the Direct, but some details may have already slipped out.
A Swiss retailer, known for previously leaking release dates for Switch 2 games, recently listed Ocarina of Time’s official release as December 1, 2026. If this is accurate, there will be a full month between the release of Ocarina of Time and Grand Theft Auto 6. A holiday launch for such a high-profile title, along with new hardware color options, could help fans adjust to the recent $50 price increase for the Nintendo Switch 2. While the console may be pricier, Nintendo has had a strong lineup of hits this year, which will be further enhanced by the remake of one of the most influential and cherished games in history.
