Nintendo Confirms Enhanced Switch 2 Launching in Europe

Thanks to new consumer protection laws in the European Union, Nintendo is set to launch an updated version of the Switch 2 featuring user-replaceable batteries. The company has quietly updated the “Compliance with EU Directives and Regulations” section on its website, indicating that by February 18, 2027, when the regulation comes into effect, new hardware versions will be available that simplify battery replacement.

The compliance statement specifies that “products with model numbers starting with ‘BEE’” will receive these updates. The Switch 2’s model number is BEE-001, while the Joy-Con 2 and Pro Controller are BEE-012 and BEE-014, respectively, suggesting these accessories may also see improvements.

Although the announcement doesn’t detail how the user-replaceable batteries will work, currently, replacing the Switch 2’s batteries through official channels requires a service request to Nintendo America. Unofficially, the process can take several hours, demand a good deal of skill, and involve multiple tools, all while risking permanent damage to the device.

In April 2024, the European Parliament approved the Right to Repair Directive, which mandates that manufacturers make it easier for consumers to repair and maintain various products, including gaming hardware. This initiative aims to promote sustainability by extending product lifespans, helping consumers save money, and supporting the EU’s Green Deal.

A Japanese publication previously reported that these battery updates were in the works for the Switch 2 and its controllers, with Nintendo considering similar changes for other regions that adopt comparable laws. It appears that the company may not roll out the enhanced console in other countries unless compelled to do so, leaving consumers to navigate the realities of the market and potentially repurchase $500 handhelds when they run low on power.

Additionally, purple and green Joy-Con 2 options are set to launch in February.
