Nintendo drops wild Switch 2 update for Mario Kart 8, introducing 8-player split-screen mode.

Nintendo has just rolled out an unexpected update for the 71 million players of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, introducing fresh support for the Switch 2 in this beloved kart-racing title from 2017. This update enhances the game with features like improved visuals for the Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, along with quicker loading times.

But that’s not all—Nintendo has really upped the ante with the Switch 2 upgrade for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, adding expanded split-screen multiplayer and new perks for Booster Course Pass owners.

According to the patch notes, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now accommodates up to eight players on a single screen when played on the Switch 2, effectively doubling the split-screen capacity from the original Nintendo Switch. Players can connect up to seven controllers—either Joy-Cons or Switch Pro Controllers—to enjoy this eight-player split-screen experience. To make this happen, at least one Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is necessary.

It’s safe to say that having eight players on one screen is bound to create some delightful chaos.

In addition to the eight-player feature, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now includes CameraPlay on the Switch 2, adding another layer of fun to the gameplay.

The update also boosts the overall speed of races, increasing player speed by the equivalent of one coin. It’s time for those time trials to get a fresh look, speedsters!

While eight-player split-screen is already impressive, the update boasts an even more staggering number: 96. Players with access to the Booster Course Pass can now take on a “96 Races” endurance challenge in the game’s “VS Race” settings, covering all 96 courses available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and its six-part, 48-course DLC. That’s some wild racing action!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched for the original Nintendo Switch in April 2017, just a month after the console’s debut. This title is an enhanced version of Mario Kart 8, which originally hit the Wii U in 2014. Here’s hoping that Switch 2 owners can look forward to a similar decade of support for Mario Kart World, which could definitely use some new content.

The series’ open-world move is compromised, while the racing is as deep and joyous as it’s ever been.
