Nintendo Faces Potential Price Hike for Switch 2 Amid Challenging Market Conditions
Nintendo might be gearing up to follow the lead of its competitors and announce a price increase for the Switch 2, as suggested by insights from a gaming market analysis firm. Despite the new console significantly outpacing the original Switch in sales during its first year, rising RAM costs and ongoing tariffs could impact its pricing strategy.
According to the report, Nintendo initially set the Switch 2’s entry price at $449 when it launched in June 2025, even as trade tensions between the U.S. and China led to price hikes for rival consoles. However, the firm anticipates that Nintendo may need to adjust its pricing in 2026 due to high import taxes and increased memory costs. Even industry leaders are cautioning that this year could see companies passing more of the tariff burden onto consumers.
Nintendo’s President previously indicated that the company could maintain the Switch 2’s price at $450 while keeping hardware profitability stable, unless significant external changes occurred. With current market conditions, that stability may be at risk. Earlier this year, he mentioned that the company was keeping an eye on RAM prices and did not rule out a potential price hike.
These developments suggest that anyone considering a Switch 2 purchase in the coming year might want to act sooner rather than later. The analysis also hints that Nintendo could opt to sell a $500 bundle instead of raising the price of the standalone model. Meanwhile, the latter half of the console’s launch year has been less consistent than the first.
Despite achieving record sales for a Nintendo console and nearly doubling the original Switch’s sales in Japan within its first 30 weeks, Nintendo’s stock has taken a hit. Reports indicate that the Switch 2’s holiday hardware sales were down 35 percent compared to the original Switch’s launch year. While overall hardware sales appear strong, game sales and attach rates have reportedly declined compared to the first Switch’s debut.
In the last three months, Nintendo’s stock price has plummeted by 23.45 percent. With pressures from RAM shortages and a challenging holiday season for the Switch 2, Nintendo faces the tough task of sustaining its launch momentum while also considering a price increase. The only potential solution to this dilemma might be the announcement of a new 3D Mario or Zelda adventure, but neither has been confirmed yet.
