Nintendo Highlights Another N64 Classic That Just Received a Free Update

Star Fox for the Switch 2 just received an unexpected update, introducing new stages and features for battle mode, along with some notable adjustments throughout the game. While it doesn’t bring an entirely new mode, it serves as a reminder that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time wasn’t the only Nintendo 64 classic to be remade for the Switch 2 in 2026.

The 1.2.0 update went live last night, adding Katina, Sector X, and Venom to battle mode, as well as enabling 4-player split-screen on a single Switch 2. Lobbies will now remain active even if the host leaves, and new items will appear during battles. For those diving into the main campaign, there’s a significant improvement in how boss damage is indicated onscreen, making it much clearer when you’re landing hits that actually affect them.

Despite Fox McCloud’s appearance in the billion-dollar grossing Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year, the Star Fox remake hasn’t exactly set the sales charts on fire. However, with the holiday season approaching, that could change. Still, it may struggle to compete for attention with Ocarina of Time sitting right beside it on store shelves, especially since the digital version is currently priced at $50 and features a story mode that lasts under two hours.

There are ongoing rumors about a new Star Fox game potentially in development, which could offer fans a more expansive adventure with McCloud and the crew in the near future. In the meantime, players can always revisit Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube, which became available on Switch Online over the summer.
