Nintendo is looking to have Monolith Soft play a key role in developing a new and unique entry in the Zelda series.

Daiki Iwamoto, the general manager for the Zelda series at Nintendo, has expressed a desire for Monolith Soft, the studio behind the collaboration on Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, to take on a “central role” in developing a new and unique title within The Legend of Zelda franchise.

In a recent interview featured on the Monolith Soft website, Iwamoto shared insights into the future of their development partnership with the creators of Xenoblade. Monolith Soft has played a significant role in the development of major titles in the Zelda series, including Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Initially, Monolith Soft’s involvement with Skyward Sword was more of a supportive nature, focusing on creating specific assets as requested by Nintendo. However, over time, the collaboration has evolved, with Monolith Soft contributing creative ideas, providing feedback, and adapting to Nintendo’s development style.

With this strengthened partnership, Nintendo is considering allowing Monolith Soft to take the lead on a future Zelda game.

“Monolith Soft is a strong partner when it comes to developing Zelda games from scratch,” Iwamoto stated. “And more and more I would like to see them taking on a central role in production. Going forward, let’s use the know-how we’ve developed by working together, and the strength of the whole Monolith Soft team, to create a unique title in the series together.”

While discussions about collaboration continue, it seems Nintendo is open to the idea of letting Monolith Soft take charge of a future installment in the series. However, it’s unlikely that this would involve a direct sequel like Breath of the Wild 3. That said, the Zelda franchise has always had room for spin-offs and new directions.

As we approach the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, there’s a growing hope that Nintendo will revisit its rich legacy and create a new classic akin to Ocarina of Time.
