Nintendo kicked off 2026 with significant updates for beloved games that debuted on the original Switch. The transformative 3.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduced a hotel feature that attracts tourists to your island and enhanced visuals for Switch 2. Meanwhile, Splatoon’s substantial 11.0.0 update brought major gameplay changes, including the new Flow Aura mechanic for kill streaks and health bars showing approximate HP for both allies and opponents.

During a recent investor presentation, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared the company’s approach to rolling out substantial updates for legacy Switch titles. Here’s a paraphrased version of his thoughts:

“To encourage the adoption of a new platform, it’s crucial to regularly release new titles. As we transition from Switch to Switch 2 in the coming years, maintaining our connection with existing customers is vital,” Furukawa stated.

“We aimed to refresh major Switch titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Splatoon 3 at this time. This strategy allows more players to keep enjoying the original Switch while providing a smooth transition to Switch 2, especially when new titles of interest are released. We believe updating popular software for the widely used Switch helps sustain its user base and encourages players to revisit these games.”

Notably, both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Splatoon 3 received updates that enhance gameplay on the original Switch while also introducing features exclusive to Switch 2. It seems Nintendo’s strategy is to entice returning players with exciting new content, subtly reminding them that the experience is even better on Switch 2.

And if you’ve just picked up a Nintendo Switch 2, here’s everything you need to get started!
