Nintendo Switch Becomes Nintendo’s Top-Selling Console, Closing in on PS2 Records
Its successor may have launched last year, but the Nintendo Switch has just claimed the title of Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, finally overtaking the DS.
According to Nintendo’s latest sales data, as of December 31, 2025, the Switch has sold 155.37 million units. This gives it a solid edge over the DS family, which totaled 155.02 million units throughout its lifetime, a record that has only just been surpassed.
These numbers also indicate that the Switch is steadily closing in on the PlayStation 2, which still holds the crown as the best-selling console of all time with over 160 million units sold. As expected, the pace of Switch sales is beginning to slow now that the Switch 2 is available, but could this older Nintendo hardware manage one last surge to dethrone the iconic Sony console? Only time will tell.
Speaking of the Switch 2, it has already sold over 17.37 million units, achieving this milestone in under seven months, which means it has outpaced the Wii U’s total sales in record time. While it seemed inevitable, the speed of this achievement is impressive. Additionally, Nintendo’s latest financial results reveal that the new hardware continues to outperform the original Switch, with a cumulative global sell-through of 15 million units by the fourth week of December 2025, making it the “fastest-selling dedicated video game platform released by Nintendo to date.”
At less than a year old, it’s still early days for the Switch 2. Given its current sales trajectory, it could eventually surpass both the Switch and the PS2. For now, though, the original Switch remains Nintendo’s standout success, and its successor has a long way to go before it catches up.
