Nintendo’s Switch 2 Sales Near 20 Million, Yet Concerns About Future Persist
Nintendo has just shared its latest financial results, revealing a treasure trove of information about hardware and game sales since the launch of the new console. With nearly 20 million Switch 2 units sold since last June and close to 50 million games flying off the shelves, it’s hard to see this launch as anything but a resounding success. However, Nintendo is still adjusting its strategy with a significant price increase and a downward revision of its sales forecasts.
As of March 31, 2026, Nintendo has highlighted the incredible impact of the Switch 2 in its first nine months, reporting 19.86 million units sold globally, along with 48.71 million games sold. The company also updated the sales figures for the original Switch, which now stands at an impressive 155.92 million units, with over 1.5 billion games sold.
Despite this success, Nintendo has lowered its sales expectations for the Switch 2. The forecast for the upcoming year has dropped from 19.86 million to 16.5 million units, a notable decrease. However, the price hikes—particularly the more substantial increases in Japan—are expected to offset some of the anticipated revenue loss.
Among the 50 million games sold for the Switch 2, a significant portion belongs to Mario Kart World, which has moved 14.7 million copies in just nine months, accounting for 30 percent of the total game sales for the console. Following closely is Donkey Kong Bananza with 4.52 million copies sold, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A at 3.94 million after five months on the market.
One of the standout figures is Pokémon Pokopia, which, despite being available for only 26 days when these numbers were recorded, has already sold 2.41 million units. Rounding out the list is Kirby Air Riders, which managed to sell 1.87 million copies in its first four months, a commendable feat given its mixed reviews.
These figures, while impressive, pale in comparison to the original Switch’s game sales after nine years. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe leads the pack with a staggering 71.08 million copies sold, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons follows at a respectable distance, just shy of 50 million.
