Nintendo’s Virtual Boy comeback set to launch next week
In 2026, Nintendo is set to launch new titles for the Virtual Boy. Starting August 4, players with a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 can dive into D-Hopper and Zero Racers for the first time via Nintendo Switch Online.
Earlier this year, Nintendo added the Virtual Boy to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, debuting with seven games and promising more, including some that were never released. On July 30, the company confirmed that D-Hopper (also known as Dragon Hopper) and Zero Racers would be available soon.
These unreleased gems were originally in development for a 1996 launch but were shelved due to the Virtual Boy’s commercial struggles.
D-Hopper is an action-adventure game reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda series, crafted by Intelligent Systems (known for Fire Emblem and WarioWare). Players take on the role of a prince navigating a fantasy world, rescuing allies, and gearing up to confront a corrupt politician—classic adventure fare.
Zero Racers, on the other hand, is an F-Zero-style racing game featuring two modes: Grand Prix and Practice. Grand Prix pits you against opponents in a series of races, while Practice allows you to hone your skills on any track solo.
What really stands out about this announcement is the trailer, which is surprisingly captivating. It features a man in a desolate desert unearthing a chest that contains a Virtual Boy. As he plays, we get a glimpse of the system’s iconic red color palette in action. The trailer concludes with the ominous shadow of what seems to be a giant sentient Virtual Boy looming over him. The meaning behind this is anyone’s guess, and it might remain a mystery. Additionally, the trailer revealed that soundtracks from Virtual Boy titles are now available on Nintendo Music.
This announcement is sure to pique the interest of fans who appreciate retro gaming curiosities.
