No Man’s Sky Director Emphasizes Traditional Game Development Over AI Experiments

When No Man’s Sky first launched, one of its standout features was the use of advanced algorithms to create an almost infinite number of worlds, far beyond what any single player could explore in a lifetime. Fast forward ten years, and some companies are now touting innovative technologies like large language models and generative AI as the next big leap for game development. However, Sean Murray, managing director of Hello Games, isn’t rushing to jump on that bandwagon.

Reflecting on the challenges of running a studio post-COVID, Murray shared, “We were all trying to figure out how to operate a game development company. How do we get people to collaborate again? Will they be in offices or working hybrid? We had many discussions about it. I suggested, ‘Let’s just hold back, stay working from home, and let everyone else f*ck it up.’”

Murray’s strategy for Hello Games mirrors this cautious approach toward the current buzz surrounding generative AI. Before co-founding Hello Games, he was a lead programmer at Criterion Games, which was under Electronic Arts during his time on the cult classic FPS, Black. EA is reportedly banking on AI advancements to help mitigate some of its debt following a massive $55 billion sale to Saudi Arabia.

“I see EA has been acquired by the Saudis,” he noted. “They’re saying, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll save billions by using AI.’ I think, cool, good luck with that. I’ll be watching from a distance.”

Murray plans to observe how the industry evolves over the next few years, just as he did with the shift to remote work after the pandemic. Recently, major titles like the Tomb Raider remake and the new Crazy Taxi faced backlash from fans for revealing that generative AI played a role in their development. Players are concerned about the potential for subpar quality in finished games, while developers struggle to communicate the tangible benefits of integrating this technology.

Murray believes that AI won’t fundamentally alter the core challenges of game development. “Making video games is really hard, and people will realize that the tough aspects of creating a game that feels great to play remain unchanged,” he stated. “My focus is on enjoying the process of making games the way we always have. That approach is still working for us, and we still love it.”
