Nothing OS 5.0 Introduces Enhanced Glyph Interface and Customizable Home Screen Features
With the arrival of Nothing OS 5.0, app icons and widgets now feature adaptive color, pulling tints from your wallpaper that refresh whenever you change it. This, combined with Android’s Dynamic Colors, allows for specific elements to shift in hue while maintaining Nothing’s signature monochrome aesthetic underneath.
While I appreciate the clean, monochrome look of Nothing’s app icons, it’s refreshing to have the option to introduce some color to the homescreen. This new feature is being introduced as “an additional theme,” so you can stick with the classic design if that’s your preference.
The Android 17-based update is set to enter open beta on August 26th, starting with the Nothing Phone 3. It will eventually be available for most of Nothing’s other devices, though a few older models, including the Phone 1, Phone 2, and CMF Phone 1, will miss out on this update. Unfortunately, I’m using the CMF Phone 1, so I won’t be able to experience these new features myself.
The latest iteration of Nothing OS also brings a variety of new homescreen customization options and quality-of-life improvements. You’ll be able to monitor how long you’ve been away from your phone and make better use of its Essential AI features. For those with a Nothing phone featuring the glyph interface lighting, a new dedicated app consolidates all controls and features in one place.
Lockscreen clockfaces can now also adapt colors from your wallpaper. Additionally, Nothing OS 5.0 introduces new lockscreen clock designs, including a playful “Gooey” style and a more information-rich “Micrographics” option.
Since Nothing OS 5.0 is built on Android 17, it includes various platform enhancements such as improved quick sharing, the new Noto 3D emojis, and expanded dark theme support. Other notable features include:
* The “Geist” system typeface
* An Away Time widget that tracks your phone usage, and a Collector widget that transforms images of items into icons for your home or lock screen
* The ability to select multiple app icons on the homescreen for batch movement
* Animated status bar icons to indicate actions like toggling airplane mode
* One-tap Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings
* Essential AI updates, including support for Model Context Protocol (MCP), clearer transcriptions from Essential Voice, a Smart Collections feature for organizing Essential Space captures, and the ability to build Essential Apps directly on the device.
