Nvidia’s AI Gaming Graphics Tech Faces Widespread Criticism

Nvidia’s introduction of its new DLSS 5 technology isn’t going quite as they envisioned. The AI powerhouse aimed to showcase this graphical upgrade as a game-changer for the next wave of hyper-realistic video games. Instead, the internet has erupted with memes that humorously critique the bizarre “enhancements” brought by DLSS 5.

Now, Nvidia is scrambling to manage the fallout.

DLSS 5 is exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX 50-series graphics cards. This tech employs machine learning and real-time neural rendering, promising to “infuse pixels with photoreal lighting and materials.” However, rather than being wowed, gamers are left scratching their heads. While it’s not technically a filter, many are drawing comparisons to beauty filters found on social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. The transformation of characters like Grace and Leon from Resident Evil Requiem into seemingly different personas has caught the public’s attention. Despite Nvidia’s claims that DLSS 5 doesn’t alter textures or geometry — and that it does enhance non-human environmental elements — gamers remain skeptical.

It’s no surprise that Nvidia has been busy clarifying what DLSS 5 is “meant” to achieve in the comments section of its YouTube trailer. In response to criticisms labeling DLSS 5 as “AI slop” that undermines artistic integrity, Nvidia asserts that “game developers have full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5’s effects to ensure they maintain their game’s unique aesthetic.”

Even if Leon S. Kennedy was always intended to resemble a generic pretty boy conjured by OpenAI’s Sora, the damage to Nvidia’s reputation is already apparent. Most discussions surrounding DLSS 5 online are filled with jokes. Given that Nvidia might be hinting at a future filled with yassified versions of major games, a good laugh is certainly welcome.

While Nvidia has backing from prominent studios like Bethesda and Capcom, some game developers are also chiming in on the AI misstep.
