Nvidia’s Controversial AI Filter Could Diminish Game Performance
The buzz around Nvidia’s upscaling tech, DLSS 5, continues to sour. Reports indicate that the latest iteration of Deep Learning Super Sampling is not only producing unattractive AI-generated visuals but also slashing frame rates by up to 50%. That’s a tough pill to swallow.
After experiencing a demo, a reporter expressed skepticism about the technology. While there are some improvements when developers fine-tune DLSS 5, Nvidia has stated that users can expect a significant frame rate drop across the board, which is a stark contrast to the traditional role of DLSS in enhancing performance. This revelation does little to help the software’s already tarnished reputation.
The controversy surrounding DLSS 5 stems from its real-time neural rendering model, which raises ethical and environmental questions similar to those associated with generative AI. The initial demo left much to be desired, with the software often disregarding artistic vision. Character models can end up looking either like overly polished supermodels or disturbingly unnatural figures.
Though DLSS 5 hasn’t officially launched yet, players recently managed to extract files from an early access version of NBA 2K27, attempting to use it with other titles. While some results were less jarring than those seen during the initial reveal alongside Resident Evil Requiem, others showcased even more unsettling transformations, particularly in games with an anime style.
This tech wasn’t designed for many of these titles, and the backlash has only worsened Nvidia’s standing among gamers. The company has seen substantial profits from the generative AI boom, leading to complaints that it has shifted its focus away from core gaming needs. Recent graphics card releases have been met with disappointment, and many players are likely to steer clear of DLSS 5 due to its significant performance drawbacks. The controversial software is set to debut with NBA 2K27 on September 3.
While it would be great to think that this wave of criticism could steer Nvidia in a better direction, the company’s financial success from generative AI suggests otherwise. Until the hype subsides, PC gamers can expect to face high hardware prices and more underwhelming offerings from Nvidia.
Gamers are already experimenting with DLSS 5 in titles like GTA: San Andreas and Skyrim.
