“Obsession Breaks Records with Over $300M at the Box Office”
One of the year’s most surprising successes continues to shine at the box office. Obsession is on track to surpass the $300 million mark globally, achieving an astonishing return of over 400 times its modest $750,000 production budget. The claims about the decline of cinema appear to be greatly overstated.
This year has seen a significant shift in box office trends, with horror films driven by Gen Z breaking records while established franchises struggle. Obsession, crafted by 26-year-old Curry Barker, marks his transition from YouTube creator to feature film director, following his debut with Milk & Serial in 2024.
The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was acquired for approximately $14 million. Its U.S. theatrical release began on May 15, quickly becoming a viral hit among younger audiences, maintaining the No. 2 position at the domestic box office for an entire month and becoming the highest-grossing film for its distributor. Currently, it ranks as the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2026 domestically, trailing behind major blockbusters that had significantly larger budgets.
Alongside Backrooms, another horror film aimed at Gen Z that has grossed over $250 million on a small budget, it’s evident that younger viewers are eager to hit theaters for original content that resonates with their generation. In contrast, the latest entries in long-standing franchises, such as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe, have struggled to achieve similar success.
Curry Barker is set to make a significant impact in the near future, with several projects in development. In April, it was announced that he would be writing and directing a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Additionally, this week, it was revealed that Barker will write, direct, and produce an original horror film in collaboration with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures, and Divide/Conquer.
As if that weren’t enough, Barker’s upcoming film, Anything But Ghosts, featuring Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw, is already in post-production. The story follows two fake paranormal investigators who find themselves in over their heads when they encounter real ghosts. This film will also be distributed by Focus, and Barker has indicated that it exists within the same universe as Obsession. While Hollywood faces its challenges, Barker’s success demonstrates that there is still hope for the industry.
Curry Barker’s debut feature presents a contemporary threat for a less religious age.
