Obsession Makes a One-Day Comeback in Theaters with Special Screening
It looks like Obsession’s incredible run in theaters has one last encore.
This horror flick is making a return to cinemas for a special one-day event in October, just in time for the Halloween festivities. But this time, there’s a twist: Regal Cinemas will be screening the film in 4DX. An announcement on social media teased, “You wished for this. Obsession back in theaters in 4DX for one day only.” Tickets for this unique experience are already on sale.
For those unfamiliar with 4DX, it’s an immersive film format that combines motion seats, wind, fog, strobe lights, scents, water sprays, and more to fully engage viewers in the cinematic experience. It might sound a bit over-the-top, and it definitely is. The format gained popularity recently, especially with the success of The Odyssey, sparking interest in various movie formats like 70mm IMAX.
However, Obsession seems like an unusual choice for 4DX. Most films that utilize this format tend to focus on grand spectacles and action-packed sequences. Upcoming 4DX titles like Godzilla Minus Zero and Avengers: Doomsday fit that mold perfectly. That said, while 4DX is known for its intense effects like seat shaking and water sprays, Obsession might lean into subtler elements like fog and lighting to heighten the film’s suspense. Let’s hope there’s no Smell-O-Vision involved!
Regardless of how well Obsession translates to 4DX, it had an impressive theatrical performance. The film raked in $520 million against a budget of less than $1 million, making it one of the most profitable films ever. It became a cultural phenomenon, particularly among Gen Z audiences, and even managed to earn more in its second weekend than its first, thanks to strong word of mouth.
Director Curry Barker is already lined up for several upcoming projects, including a horror comedy titled Anything but Ghosts set for 2027. He’s also working on a reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for A24 and directing an original horror film for Universal Pictures.
The year 2026 has marked a resurgence for the box office, with lower-budget hits like Backrooms alongside major blockbusters such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. Hollywood is on track for its first $10 billion year since before the COVID-19 pandemic. While it may not hold the same cultural dominance as in its prime, the film industry appears to be making a strong comeback.
