Obsidian is said to be developing a new Fallout title.
With Bethesda concentrating on The Elder Scrolls 6, which is still years away from release, fans weren’t anticipating a new Fallout title anytime soon. However, a recent report suggests that this may change: Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly developing a new installment in the beloved post-apocalyptic RPG series.
While Bethesda Game Studios has brought Fallout to a wider audience, many fans believe that the pinnacle of the franchise was achieved with Fallout: New Vegas, a spinoff crafted by Obsidian Entertainment. Released in 2010, this game embraced the series’ roots in computer role-playing, featuring choice-driven gameplay and a narrative rich in dialogue. Instead of funneling players into a few major paths, New Vegas rewarded those who explored niche builds with unique dialogue options and mission solutions. It’s reminiscent of Baldur’s Gate 3, but set in a grittier sci-fi universe.
Despite its critical success, Obsidian never had the opportunity to create another Fallout game. Insiders have indicated that Bethesda was dissatisfied with the hardcore elements of New Vegas and its profitability compared to the main series. Nevertheless, whenever the franchise is discussed, fans consistently express their desire for more games in the spirit of Fallout: New Vegas.
According to Bloomberg, those hopes might soon be realized. A new Fallout game is reportedly being led by Josh Sawyer, the director of New Vegas. The project is still in its early stages, and details are likely to evolve, as noted in the report.
Previously, Obsidian was working on a sequel to its RPG Avowed. However, following Xbox’s significant restructuring and a shift in focus towards its larger franchises, that project has reportedly been canceled. This change comes in the wake of layoffs that impacted about a quarter of Obsidian’s staff.
The push for a new Fallout game is logical. Fallout is a massive franchise that has sold millions of copies, and it has been over a decade since Fallout 4 was released. With the recent success of Amazon’s Prime Video adaptation of the series, casual viewers looking for something similar are left with a notoriously buggy game that’s over 15 years old. With Obsidian involved, Xbox can respond to this renewed interest much more swiftly.
While the majority of the studio will be dedicated to the new Fallout project, the report mentions that a portion will also focus on developing content for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2. There is currently no official release window for the new Fallout game, and it remains unclear whether it will be a spinoff like Fallout: New Vegas 2 or a title in the main series.
