Ocarina of Time Remake Resembles Unreal Engine Fan Project, Sparking Online Reactions
Earlier today, Nintendo unveiled gameplay footage of the highly anticipated remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2. Reactions to the enhanced graphics and character models have been quite mixed, with some players expressing surprise at how closely it resembles an Unreal Engine fan mod, while others are impressed by the level of detail.
During a special Direct event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, Nintendo showcased a variety of announcements, including a Zelda-themed concert tour and new Amiibo figures. However, the highlight was undoubtedly the extended gameplay demo of the Ocarina of Time remake, exclusive to Switch 2. Since its teaser reveal earlier this year, fans have been anxious about the remake’s visual direction, fearing it might echo the numerous Unreal Engine fan games that have proliferated online. For many, the new visuals indeed evoke a sense of déjà vu.

One of the earliest reactions to the initial screenshots was, “I’m crying it actually looks like that joke Mario game.” Others chimed in, noting that Young Link in the remake gives off strong Unreal Engine fan game vibes. Some comments were more direct: “THIS LOOKS SO UGLY OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.”
A significant portion of the negative feedback seems to center around Young Link, whose hyper-realistic design contrasts sharply with the more stylized environments, creating an uncanny effect. A user on Bluesky shared a screenshot from the Zelda Direct that highlights this disparity, showing Link with intricate details standing next to villagers whose simpler designs appear more appealing.
this is so funny, everyone who isn’t link has less details and directly because of that they look better

Naturally, the internet had its share of jokes about the remake’s visuals, with many comparing it to Unreal Engine fan remakes and mods. Some humorously noted that a wet Link looked like a product of DLSS 5.

However, not everyone is critical of the remake. As the gameplay footage progressed, more positive comments emerged, particularly regarding areas like Hyrule Field and cave battles, which showcased a more appealing aesthetic. Many fans are praising the reimagined visual style and character designs.

Complain all you want, I think this looks fucking gorgeous. What a strong art direction and reimagination of a place I know so intimately.

This was the moment where I truly fell in love with Zelda and realised it was bigger than anything I’d played before. I cannot wait to play this again.
Ocarina is my most replayed game of all time, and I suspect I’ll be going through the remake more than a few times!

“I’ve gone through enough cycles of ‘ew new Zelda art style sucks’ to know to withhold my judgement until I see it in context, but there is definitely an uncanniness to the Ocarina remake that’s hard to shake on first look. We’ll see,” noted a user wisely.
This pattern of initial skepticism followed by eventual acceptance is familiar to Zelda fans. A new game is revealed, and the visuals are critiqued, only for those same visuals to be later praised in comparison to future titles. Still, it’s hard to ignore the oddity of Link’s model in this remake. Even Adult Link seems off compared to the other characters, which, while looking decent in motion, might come off as a bit bland.
It will be interesting to see if Nintendo makes any adjustments to Link’s appearance before the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on November 5.
