Octopath Traveler TTRPG Gets Its First English Translation
Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler stands out as a role-playing game gem, intertwining the narratives of eight distinct heroes, each with rich backstories and personal quests for redemption. Designer Yura Kubota has transformed the mechanics and lore from the original 2018 game and its 2022 free-to-play prequel, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, into a tabletop role-playing game format. The Octopath Traveler TRPG Rulebook is set to make its English debut this October.
The translation of this 328-page tome is being managed by Dark Horse Books, and it’s available for preorder at $59.99. The game employs a 2d6 system, allowing players to utilize pre-made character sheets to embody characters from the original games. Additionally, players can venture through the world of Orsterra with new characters created by mixing different classes and backgrounds. The rulebook features pre-written adventures filled with action and intrigue, along with guidance for game masters to help players craft their own unique journeys. It seems the game is designed to accommodate larger groups, or at least parties that can easily rotate members based on availability for quests.
While Japanese role-playing video games like Octopath Traveler, Final Fantasy, and Bravely Default have garnered massive global followings, the country’s tabletop RPGs have only recently begun to gain traction through localization efforts. A BackerKit campaign is set to launch in March to support the first official translation of Sword World RPG. Additionally, the publisher Group SNE is releasing a TTRPG inspired by Elden Ring Nightreign this spring, with hopes for an English version as well.
For those eager to experience JRPG elements at the gaming table in the meantime, Fabula Ultima offers a range of books that delve into natural fantasy, science fiction, and high fantasy settings.
