“One Battle After Another Leads the Pack with Golden Globe Nominations, While Sinners Follows Closely”

It’s no surprise that One Battle After Another has emerged as the most nominated film at the Golden Globes, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners trailing closely behind.

One Battle After Another, adapted from Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, has snagged an impressive nine nominations, making it the standout film of the year. The nominations include Best Motion Picture (Comedy), Best Director, Best Actor (Comedy) for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Actress (Comedy) for Infiniti (which is a thrilling win for cinema enthusiasts), Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) for both Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, Best Supporting Actress (Comedy) for Teyana Taylor, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, this black comedy tells the story of an ex-revolutionary (played by DiCaprio) who is forced out of hiding when he and his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), are hunted by a corrupt military officer (Sean Penn). The film has received critical acclaim and currently holds the title of the highest-rated movie of the year on Metacritic.

On the other hand, Sinners, a vampire horror set in 1932 and directed by Coogler, has been nominated for Best Motion Picture in the Drama category, with Michael B. Jordan up for Best Actor (Drama), Best Director, Best Original Score, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and Best Original Song. It’s been a fantastic year for horror, and it’s heartening to see the genre getting recognition from awards bodies once again, especially after The Substance received several nominations at both the Globes and the Oscars last year. While Sinners and One Battle After Another are quite different in genre, I’m cheering for both Anderson and Coogler—can we just split the award and give a piece to each filmmaker?
