OpenAI’s Sora Video Generator Set to Launch in ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Sora video generator might soon be integrated directly into ChatGPT, according to reports. Currently, Sora is only accessible via its website or as a standalone app, which hasn’t quite matched the popularity of ChatGPT. This integration would enable users to utilize Sora’s video creation features right within ChatGPT, similar to how image generation was added to the chatbot last year.
The inclusion of Sora could draw more users to ChatGPT, but it also raises concerns about an increase in deepfakes produced by the video generator. Since its launch less than a year ago, Sora has been used to create realistic yet disrespectful deepfakes of notable figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and videos that infringe on copyright.
Making Sora more accessible through ChatGPT could lead to a rise in deepfake content and increase the chances of users finding ways to bypass OpenAI’s safeguards, such as removing watermarks that indicate a video is AI-generated. Users have a history of exploiting loopholes in AI image and video generators, often by cleverly modifying prompts to mislead the AI.
The potential addition of Sora to ChatGPT comes at a time when OpenAI is facing heightened competition. Anthropic’s Claude has gained significant traction recently, coinciding with a noticeable uptick in uninstalls of ChatGPT. Anthropic has garnered public support after declining a Pentagon request to use Claude for mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry, while OpenAI accepted the Pentagon’s terms, prompting some users to move away from ChatGPT. Integrating Sora could be a strategy to win back those users.
However, as noted, Sora’s integration might also “increase costs” for OpenAI, which could lead to further adjustments in ChatGPT’s pricing structure. Recently, the platform began displaying ads to users on its lower-tier plans.
