Oppenheimer Now Available for Free Streaming

The Christopher Nolan excitement train keeps rolling! With his latest film, The Odyssey, making waves at the box office, his 2023 hit Oppenheimer is now more accessible than ever. It’s back on several streaming platforms for free (with ads).

Oppenheimer has returned to Peacock after a year-long hiatus. Its absence was puzzling, especially since it was produced by Universal, a part of NBCUniversal. You’d expect one of NBC’s standout films to be a key feature on its streaming service. Alongside its return to Peacock, Oppenheimer is also available for free with ads on Fandango.

This biopic had an impressive box office performance, raking in $975 million globally, despite its three-hour runtime. Its success was fueled by the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, where Nolan’s film and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie launched on the same weekend. Both films were massive hits, with Barbie surpassing $1.4 billion.

As with many of Nolan’s works, Oppenheimer received high praise from both critics and audiences, boasting a 93% critic score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It garnered 13 nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, winning accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. The film reignited long-standing discussions about the devastating impact of nuclear weapons, particularly regarding their use against civilians by the United States.

Focusing on J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons, the film draws from the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird. It chronicles Oppenheimer’s journey from college to his role as director of the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Laboratory, and the post-war security hearings concerning his alleged communist ties.

With Oppenheimer and The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan is on an incredible streak, and it’s safe to say his latest film will be a strong contender in the upcoming awards season.
