Original Mass Effect Voice Actors Eager to Return for Mass Effect 5
As development on Mass Effect 5 appears to be progressing amid EA’s ongoing buyout, a burning question among fans is whether Commander Shepard will make a comeback. If that happens, the talented voices behind the character are eager to step back into their roles.
Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, who voiced the female and male versions of Shepard, respectively, recently shared their thoughts during an interview on Fall Damage. When asked about the possibility of returning, Meer remarked, “I like to think Shepard is alive in all of our hearts,” to which Hale added, “Shepard is alive if you make it so.”
Hale encouraged fans to reach out to the “powers that be” at EA and BioWare to express their desire for more of the Normandy’s legendary captain. “We will be there, because we should not go,” she stated. “I would be there with bells on if they offered for me to play Shepard again.”
Meer chimed in with his usual humor, saying, “I agree, but only under any circumstances.”
However, bringing Shepard back poses some narrative challenges for the developers. Depending on players’ choices throughout the original Mass Effect trilogy, the character’s fate could vary, and if they return, it would mean making at least one of the endings more canonical than the others.
In theory, there are ways around this, such as cloning, cryogenics, or setting the story in a timeline where Commander Shepard is still active. The options are certainly there. Given the current state of the gaming industry, it’s exciting to think that more Mass Effect is on the horizon, and if the trilogy’s iconic protagonist is involved, that would be even better.
