Original Star Trek Writer Returns for Major 60th Anniversary Comic Celebration

This September marks the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, and to celebrate this iconic sci-fi franchise, a special oversized comic book titled Star Trek: The 60th Anniversary Special is set to release later this year. This one-shot comic features contributions from a diverse lineup of writers, including David Gerrold, who was part of the original TV series and is credited with creating the beloved Tribbles.

The 68-page anthology is scheduled to hit shelves on September 2. Among the talented writers involved are Brian Michael Bendis, co-creator of Miles Morales, Mike McMahan, showrunner of Lower Decks, Ryan North, known for Squirrel Girl and Lost in Random, and comedian Dana Gould.

One of the standout contributors is David Gerrold, one of the few remaining writers from the original Star Trek series. His story will focus on the notorious con artist Harry Mudd.

Gerrold shared his thoughts on the franchise’s lasting impact, stating, “The reason why Star Trek has been an enduring part of our culture is that at its heart, Star Trek has never been about finding enemies to defeat; it was always about finding allies and friends against the vast darkness of the universe.” He contributed to three episodes of the original series, including the classic “The Trouble with Tribbles.”

Reflecting on his experience, Gerrold said, “I was privileged to be a part of that original vision. It was an amazing opportunity, and I made some of the best friends anyone could ever imagine. The chance to return to the Star Trek universe and write a new story, especially one that honors the original series, yes, it was a privilege.”

In addition to Gerrold’s contribution, the special will include a one-page gag story featuring the Enterprise, a tale about Scotty from Gould, a Next Generation-era story centered on Beverly Crusher, a Starfleet Academy tie-in, and a sneak peek at an upcoming Star Trek comic from IDW.
