Overwatch 2 to Focus on Storytelling and Character Development for 10th Anniversary Despite Story Mode Cancellation

Overwatch is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, and the developers are promising some exciting developments on the horizon.

In a recent discussion, the Overwatch 2 team expressed their enthusiasm for 2026, highlighting their goal to expand “the universe and lore surrounding our Heroes, moving beyond their functional roles in a game.” While the ongoing narrative has progressed at a snail’s pace since the game’s launch, the developers are eager to take creative leaps that will enhance storytelling and character development.

This focus on “storytelling” is particularly significant, especially considering that Overwatch 2’s co-op campaign was scrapped despite being a key feature that justified the sequel’s creation. Director Aaron Keller acknowledged last summer that the studio “dropped the ball when it comes to story,” and he noted that the beloved animated shorts need to return before Blizzard can claim it’s “firing on all cylinders.” There’s hope for new animated content in 2026, but many are wishing for something more substantial to be integrated into the game itself.

“The development team is feeling a real sense of momentum and optimism, and we believe 2026 will be a year where our boldest ideas come to life,” the statement continued, referencing this year’s significant updates, including Perks and Stadium. “Inspired by the evolving landscape of the industry, we embraced the opportunity to take bold risks and focused on making impactful changes rather than playing it safe.”

Keller also mentioned the team’s annual strategy of “starting every year with a huge, game-defining moment and then following it up with a big mid-year beat,” so we can expect to see some dramatic changes coming to Overwatch 2 soon.

In the meantime, there are plenty of fantastic FPS games to dive into right now.
