Overwatch Begins a New Chapter: What Happens to the Cancelled Campaign Story?

Overwatch is stepping into a fresh chapter, bringing with it new annual story arcs and a stronger focus on lore that advances the narrative. This isn’t the first time we’ve been teased about a renewed emphasis on storytelling in this hero shooter. There was once a promise of a cooperative campaign that would delve into the tale of the organization battling Null Sector, an army of Omnic machines led by Ramattra, a radical figure advocating for machine liberation. After the campaign was quietly scrapped, Blizzard released a few external pieces that seemed to wrap up this narrative fairly neatly.

Currently, Null Sector and Ramattra are absent from Overwatch’s new Reign of Talon storyline. As a player of Ramattra, I couldn’t help but wonder if Blizzard was sidelining the Omnic Crisis narrative to spotlight Vendetta and her rise within the Talon terrorist organization.

“Ramattra is such an incredible character,” narrative lead Miranda Moyer shared during a group interview at Blizzard’s campus when I inquired about the fate of the Omnic Crisis storyline. “He is one of the most compelling villains that Overwatch has, and arguably one of the most intriguing characters in all of Blizzard’s history. I think many people can relate to him despite his darker actions. Personally, I’m very excited about the storyline opportunities that still exist for him. As we saw in the Reconciliation comic, he’s currently in Antarctica, so there’s still plenty of room to explore his story.”

“Yeah, we haven’t cut any leads,” added audio and technical director Scott Lawson. “There’s a lot of potential for us to keep developing.”

It seems Blizzard is open to revisiting Ramattra and the Omnic Crisis, but that may not be in this initial storyline centered on Talon’s ascent. Considering the significant changes in the narrative team since Overwatch’s launch, including the departure of original lead writer Michael Chu in 2020 and subsequent layoffs following Activision Blizzard’s merger with Xbox and the campaign’s cancellation, it’s understandable that some elements have shifted. Even if Ramattra makes a comeback in a future season, we’ll still be left pondering what the narrative could have been had Blizzard proceeded with the original campaign plan.
