Overwatch Earns Mixed Reviews After Three Years as Steam’s Lowest-Rated Game
Overwatch, previously known as Overwatch 2, made its debut on Steam in 2023 and faced a rough start, quickly becoming one of the platform’s lowest-rated games. However, as the developers have worked to enhance the experience, the overall sentiment has shifted positively, and the shooter is arguably in its best shape yet. After a tumultuous journey, Overwatch now sits at a status of mixed reviews on Steam.
Despite the improvements, negative feedback remains fierce, with players voicing concerns over costly microtransactions and the frustrations of teaming up with less skilled players. Yet, the balance between criticism and praise is beginning to stabilize.
One player shared, “This game is pretty much the only shooter I enjoy nowadays. The attention to detail is unmatched in the art, music, and narrative, as well as in gameplay design, mechanics, and strategic team-building options. Every hero feels like a unique experience, with each kit meticulously crafted to embody the ‘hero fantasy.’ Each character has their own aesthetic, personality, and lore, which unfolds through gameplay and dialogue. I love the universe they’ve created and appreciate the constant updates and new heroes.”
Conversely, some players admit to having a tumultuous relationship with Overwatch, filled with frustrating team dynamics, interrupted ultimates, and the ever-looming threat of a Sombra camping outside the spawn. These highs and lows are all too familiar for those who have endured a streak of bad matches.
One frustrated player expressed, “The absolute hatred I feel every day when opening this abomination from hell makes my blood boil. That being said, I do play almost daily. I’ve also played a ton on consoles, and I can say it’s just as frustrating there. Anyway, screw this game and see you online tomorrow.”
It seems that a frustrated yet engaged player base is preferable for developers compared to one that has completely disengaged. At least the Steam reviews are gradually improving.
Overwatch is currently undergoing a soft reboot, having dropped the “2” from its title and refocusing its narrative development in seasonal updates. The game is set to introduce 10 new heroes by 2026, each contributing to the ongoing story that the developers are weaving through comics, audio dramas, and short stories. So far, this approach has been well-received, delivering the story and character moments that fans have been eager for since the game’s initial launch in 2016.
