Overwatch Introduces New Hero with Ultimate Ability Named Limit Break, Despite No Final Fantasy Influence
D.Mon is the latest hero to join Overwatch, hailing from the same mech-driven squad of former esports players as the beloved D.Va. Like her predecessor, D.Mon is packed with gaming experience and her abilities are sprinkled with various gaming references, including one that seems to nod to Final Fantasy. However, it seems she’s not exactly a fan of Square Enix’s RPGs, according to Blizzard.
In a recent roundtable discussion with the Overwatch team, insights were shared about D.Mon’s abilities and her development. We discovered that her ultimate ability is named Limit Break. When activated, it applies a debuff to enemies akin to Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord, amplifying the damage they take. While the term Limit Break certainly evokes memories of Final Fantasy’s iconic ability, the team clarified that D.Mon isn’t exactly a fan of Cloud Strife or the RPG genre. Instead, she’s more aligned with first-person shooters.
Narrative designer Eleni Rivera explained, “At this point, she is a hardcore gamer, but she leans more towards first-person shooters and doesn’t fully connect with Final Fantasy VII. The name ‘Limit Break’ just felt right for the visuals of her ultimate. We knew it had other associations, but we were really pleased with how it represented that ultimate ability.”
While it’s a bit of a letdown that she doesn’t share a love for the RPG classic, it makes sense given the complexities of copyright and the need to keep things original. D.Va’s gaming quirks and references have generally been more broad, avoiding ties to specific games or franchises. Initially, fans speculated that D.Va was a pro Starcraft player due to her character reveal featuring a Starcraft player account, but Blizzard later clarified that her competitive gaming background was rooted in a game more akin to the interfaces used to control their mechs.
D.Mon will officially join the Overwatch roster on August 11.
