Overwatch is set to receive a new tabletop RPG adventure inspired by Critical Role.

Blizzard Entertainment has always enjoyed blending the vibrant universe of its free-to-play hero shooter, Overwatch, with various franchises and brands. Collaborations with names like Burger King, Fortnite, and even Hello Kitty have resulted in a plethora of exciting skins and entertaining events, though nothing has truly pushed the envelope—until now.

The upcoming event, Questwatch, promises to merge the sci-fi elements of Overwatch with the imaginative world of tabletop role-playing games. This first-ever Overwatch TTRPG adventure will take place live at Blizzard’s BlizzCon on September 13. Matthew Mercer, renowned for his role as the Dungeon Master on Critical Role and for voicing Cassidy, will take the helm as the game master, guiding four other heroes on a fresh quest through Overland.

While the specific heroes joining Mercer and the game system they will use remain under wraps, there’s speculation that they might utilize Critical Role’s own TTRPG, Daggerheart. This assumption is bolstered by an image shared by Blizzard, where Cassidy is seen wielding two d12 dice, commonly associated with Daggerheart. More details about Questwatch are expected to be unveiled during BlizzCon’s opening ceremony.

Cassidy may not be the first character that comes to mind for leading a TTRPG, as that role seems more suited to the likes of Lucio, Sombra, or D.Va. However, it makes sense for Blizzard to choose someone as imaginative and adept at storytelling as Mercer to guide players through a fantasy adventure.

While this event isn’t an official collaboration with Critical Role, the possibility of such a partnership in the future can’t be dismissed. Critical Role’s popularity continues to soar, and the fantasy aspects of its Dungeons & Dragons campaigns could easily lend themselves to adaptations of skins or characters within Overwatch.

Even if a collaboration doesn’t materialize, the idea of an Overwatch TTRPG remains intriguing. With popular franchises like Star Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender receiving attention from Wizards of the Coast, it’s not far-fetched to think Overwatch could follow suit. Additionally, Blizzard’s other major IP, World of Warcraft, is set to receive an official D&D book this November.

For now, Blizzard is gearing up to add a new layer of fantasy to its beloved hero shooter. The specifics of the game system and whether this adventure will tie into the ongoing narrative of Overwatch will be revealed during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon on September 12.
