Overwatch Set for Its Most Exciting Year Since 2016
Overwatch is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2026, and Blizzard Entertainment is pulling out all the stops for this milestone. This year marks a significant transformation for the game, as it drops the “2” from its title and introduces a whopping 10 new heroes.
During the recent Overwatch Spotlight showcase, Blizzard unveiled exciting plans for the franchise’s future. Expect a wealth of new content, including fresh heroes, an expansive narrative that unfolds both in and out of the game, new Stadium item icons, and a variety of cosmetics. As Overwatch steps into its second decade, major updates are on the horizon.
One of the standout announcements is the introduction of Vendetta, the newest character who ascends to the top of the Talon organization by dethroning Doomfist. This marks the beginning of a significant narrative arc called The Reign of Talon, which will be explored through in-game events, cinematics, hero trailers, short stories, comics, and map updates. This six-part story kicks off in February and will unfold over six seasons.
Players can also look forward to a new five-week faction war, where they can choose to align with either Overwatch or Talon in a global conflict. This meta event, dubbed Conquest, will reward participants with numerous loot boxes and cosmetics, including one of two faction-themed Legendary Echo skins.
In celebration of Overwatch’s 10th year, the game will welcome 10 new heroes to its roster. Among them are Domina (Tank), Anran (Damage), Emre (Damage), Jetpack Cat (Support), and Mizuki (Support), all set to launch on February 10. Five additional heroes are slated for release throughout 2026, with one debuting each season.
On the hero front, Vendetta will also be included in Stadium mode during season 1.
The current hero roster is categorized into three roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. However, these roles will soon be further divided into sub-roles that better define each hero’s function and grant them specific passive abilities. For instance, Tanks will now be classified as Bruisers, Initiators, or Stalwarts, each with unique benefits that enhance gameplay dynamics.
This sub-role system will provide Blizzard with greater flexibility for hero balancing and design, allowing for adjustments to passive abilities and hero classifications in future updates. Coupled with Perks, this gives the developers another tool to fine-tune hero balance.
A plethora of new skins is also on the way, including a fresh Mythic skin for Mercy and additional skins for Soldier: 76, Ana, Illari, Mauga, and Genji. Plus, a collaboration with Hello Kitty is in the works, alongside a host of other content for the battle pass, in-game shop, and events.
Loot boxes are getting a refresh, with all regular shop skins from the past six seasons becoming available, allowing players to unlock many previously paid-only cosmetics, including Dokiwatch skins.
The user interface and menus are set for a major redesign, touted as the largest in franchise history. This overhaul will introduce a new 3D hero lobby, a revamped notification hub, quicker navigation, and a streamlined hero gallery.
Additionally, a new Praise feature will be added to the in-game communication wheel, enabling players to activate voice lines that compliment their teammates.
Stadium mode will also see a significant icon overhaul, with over 70 redesigned icons to enhance item identification when browsing the armory.
Lastly, a new Hero Builder feature will be introduced in Stadium, providing smart recommended builds based on global player data, reducing the need to consult external resources for popular or effective hero builds.
Currently, Overwatch is available on the original Nintendo Switch, but a native version for Switch 2 players is on the way, set to launch with season 2 this spring.
