Overwatch players have had a week to get to know the new hero Jetpack Cat, but her backstory remains a mystery. The official narrative claims that support hero Brigitte found her as a stray and outfitted her with a custom jet-propulsion rig, but that doesn’t quite clear things up.

In response to the growing curiosity, Blizzard has released a lore video for Jetpack Cat, but they’re sticking to their story: Jetpack Cat is just a cat.

The narration by Brigitte’s voice actor, Matilda Smedius, includes clever meta references to the development of Jetpack Cat. “For some reason when I rescued this pretty kitty from in-between some rocket parts in the main landing bay, I thought back to some projects that never got off the ground, literally,” Brigitte reflects. “I was so young when I drafted them up.”

Later, Brigitte discusses the challenges of safely attaching a jetpack to a housecat. “How to make a joystick that doesn’t require opposable thumbs,” she muses.

This is Blizzard’s clever way of hinting that they’ve had plans for Jetpack Cat for years, finally finding a way to make it work. Yet, despite the charming video, fans are still seeking the truth.

“Okay, she’s gotta be a villain or spy of some kind, no way she’s just a cat. Maybe from the smart animals on the Lunar Colony,” speculated one Redditor who senses deception.

“She’s a villain from Horizon Lunar Colony, I’m calling it now,” another theorized.

Another commenter pointed out that support hero Moira might have some insights.

“Moira has an interaction where she mentions something about her being intelligent. Moira might know more about her origins somehow,” they noted. “I feel like her being a normal cat was off the table as soon as she was added; no regular cat could operate machinery like that.”

That’s a fair point. I just checked with my two clueless cats, and they confirmed they wouldn’t have a clue how to fly a jetpack.

One Redditor boldly claimed, “the cat is actually Doomfist,” referencing one of the game’s tank heroes.

“Anyone ever see his body? You notice how the cat dives to the ground so skillfully with her ult, just like Meteor Strike? You see how the community is so divided over this cat?” they asked. “Only through conflict do we evolve.”

Whatever the truth is about this chubby orange tabby, many aren’t buying Blizzard’s explanation. Cats are notoriously sneaky, so I’m leaning toward the spy theory. Whether Brigitte is involved remains to be seen.

Even Blizzard is asking players to stop banning Overwatch’s Jetpack Cat, and I assure you, taking down the furry menace is trickier than it appears.
