Overwatch’s New China-Exclusive Content Sparks Fan Outrage: “I Can’t Understand How Anyone Supports Blizzard After This”
Overwatch’s trend of China-exclusive skins and crossovers isn’t a new phenomenon, thanks to Blizzard’s partnership with a local publisher to bring the hero shooter to the region after a brief hiatus in 2022. However, as time goes on, it’s becoming increasingly frustrating to see the incredible designs and effects of these cosmetics. The latest batch, the Defiled Anthem skins for Shion, Kiriko, D.Mon, Reaper, and Emre, showcases some of the most impressive looks and animations yet. For players outside of China, it feels like being left out in the cold.
The Shion skin is particularly painful for many fans, as it’s one of the exclusive Evolution-rarity skins that transforms during gameplay. This trend kicked off earlier this year with a Widowmaker skin, followed by Jetpack Cat’s skin in August, which altered her fur and outfit colors. Now, Shion joins the ranks with a shapeshifting design exclusive to China.
This skin also features unique effects when Shion secures a kill, along with enhancements to her abilities, like leaving a fiery trail behind her motorcycle as she zooms around the map.
While the other heroes may not have Evolution skins, they do come with exclusive highlight intros and emotes that, as far as we know, won’t be available elsewhere. Even if you don’t main these characters, the ongoing stream of exclusive content for China is understandably frustrating for many players.
The disparity in quality is hard to ignore, with many expressing their disappointment over social media. Fans are vocal about how the exclusive skins, emotes, and intros consistently outshine what’s available globally.
The issue of exclusivity is compounded by concerns that the overall quality of skins in the main game is declining, while some of the best designs remain locked to a single region. One fan pointed out on a forum that the quality of Blizzard’s own cosmetics seems to be lacking compared to those created by the local publisher.
Walter Kong, who oversees Blizzard’s live games and mobile division, has stated that these exclusive events are part of the agreement with the local publisher. Despite the backlash from fans who feel that Chinese players are receiving preferential treatment, Blizzard plans to continue allowing these region-specific offerings.
As Overwatch’s story-driven reboot progresses, Season five is set to kick off soon, introducing a new hero, Doctrine, on October 6.
