Palworld’s New Card Game Announcement Sparks Pokémon Comparisons, Developer Weighs In on Overreactions
Palworld designer and Pocketpair’s manager, John ‘Bucky’ Buckley, believes that the reactions to the recently announced Palworld Official Card Game might be a bit overblown, especially with the inevitable comparisons to Pokémon.
The Palworld Official Card Game was revealed earlier this week as a physical trading card game set to launch in July. While the initial feedback seems mostly positive, Bucky has been addressing some of the negativity surfacing online. He remarked, “If you’re still ranting about a game you supposedly don’t like after two years, then I’m thinking it’s a you problem now… Go play something else.”
Much of the criticism stems from comparisons to Pokémon, which has its own successful trading card game alongside its creature-collecting RPGs. Following the card game announcement, some critics have claimed that Palworld “entirely relies on Pokémon to thrive,” while others have labeled it a “Pokémon ripoff.” Amid an ongoing patent infringement lawsuit, some have even joked that Pocketpair is trying to “piss off Nintendo” with this new venture.
Bucky, however, disagrees with these sentiments. He shared a fan’s tweet highlighting that there are “numerous” franchises with trading cards in the market, suggesting that “people are being dramatic about Palworld.” His succinct response? “Yes.”
Indeed, Pokémon didn’t create the concept of trading card games, and there are many others linked to video games, such as the Final Fantasy TCG and the Digimon Card Game. Given that Palworld has often been informally dubbed “Pokémon with guns,” it’s not surprising that it faces extra scrutiny, especially with the ongoing lawsuit from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company regarding certain in-game mechanics.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see how the Palworld Official Card Game performs when it launches on July 30 this year.
