Persona 4 Revival Set to Redefine a Controversial Character

The original Persona 4 debuted in 2008, and while it still resonates with fans, some aspects of its narrative haven’t aged gracefully. One character, Yosuke, has faced significant criticism over the years for his treatment of others, prompting Atlus to address these concerns in the upcoming remake, Persona 4 Revival.

Kazuhisa Wada, the general producer for the Persona Team, shared insights during an interview at this year’s Anime Expo. When asked about any controversial scenes being revised to align with contemporary audience expectations, Wada specifically mentioned Yosuke, noting that he can be “a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes.”

This comment reflects the modern player base’s view that Yosuke often exhibits misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic behavior towards other characters. A particularly infamous moment occurs during a camping scene where Yosuke makes inappropriate remarks about Kanji, who is grappling with his sexuality and gender expression, as well as his feelings for Naoto, a character whose gender identity remains a topic of discussion. Throughout the game, Yosuke also makes lewd comments directed at female party members.

Wada emphasized the intention to “lighten that up and make it a bit more fitting for the world we live in now,” regarding Yosuke’s storyline.

Atlus has shown a commitment to revising or removing problematic elements from its past games. For instance, the upcoming Persona 3 Reload has already cut a scene featuring a transgender character that included insensitive remarks from the cast. Yosuke has also seen some character development in various spin-offs; in both Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he acknowledges his past mistreatment of Kanji. Additionally, in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, which loosely ties to the original game, Yosuke displays less of his misogynistic tendencies. Updating Yosuke’s character in Persona 4 Revival aligns with this trend of improvement.

Wada reassured fans that the essence of Persona 4 remains unchanged, with the updates in the remake aimed at making the story and characters resonate better with today’s audience. He explained that the team has preserved the characters’ core thoughts and actions while altering “the way we express some of this.”

Persona 4 Revival is set to launch on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Excitingly, it will also feature anime cutscenes from the studio known for Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.
