Persona 5 Joins the Fortnite Universe
You might have seen this coming. The developers behind Persona have officially hinted that Fortnite’s upcoming season will feature the beloved role-playing game, Persona 5. This exciting crossover will be part of Chapter 7 Season 4, aptly named Override.
Override is set to embrace a Gaming Legends theme, with Sonic the Hedgehog also making an appearance, as teased earlier this week. The brief nine-second teaser from the developers showcases Persona 5’s main character, Joker, sprinting through a futuristic landscape before striking a pose for the camera. More details about the season and the nature of these game crossovers will be revealed by Epic Games soon, so keep an eye out.
This collaboration coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Persona 5’s launch. Since its debut, the game has blossomed into a franchise within the broader Persona universe, spawning an updated edition, an anime adaptation, and various spin-offs. Over the years, Persona 5 has also teamed up with several live-service games, leading to some intriguing fan theories.
One such theory is the “Persona 5 curse,” which suggests that when a live-service game collaborates with Persona 5, it faces the risk of shutting down within a year. Notable examples include titles like Star Ocean: Anamnesis, Dragalia Lost, Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag, and Nier Reincarnation.
However, many games have successfully partnered with Persona 5 and continued to thrive, such as Overwatch, Granblue Fantasy, and Another Eden. Is there really a curse at play, or is Persona 5 simply such a massive franchise that every game wants to join forces with it, even those nearing their end? It’s hard to say for certain. Will Fortnite be the next to face the curse? Only time will tell… but probably not.
Atlus’ supernatural high school RPG seems like a perfect fit for the gaming landscape.
