Persona is making its way to Netflix, thanks to the creators of Stranger Things.
Netflix is working on a live-action series inspired by the Persona role-playing game franchise from Atlus, as reported recently. The project is being produced by Story Kitchen, known for its work on the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, alongside 21 Laps, the company founded by Shawn Levy, who has credits on hits like Deadpool, Wolverine, and Free Guy, and is also a producer on Stranger Things.
Christopher Monfette is set to write the adaptation and will take on the roles of executive producer and showrunner. Monfette has a solid background, having worked as a writer and producer on shows like Star Trek: Picard, Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, and Fox’s 9-1-1. He’s also involved with Marvel Television’s upcoming VisionQuest for Disney Plus.
While Netflix’s Persona adaptation isn’t finalized yet, it showcases the platform’s commitment to video game adaptations. The streaming service has previously turned Riot Games’ League of Legends into the animated series Arcane and has released animated shows based on Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077, Devil May Cry, and Tomb Raider. However, its ventures into live-action adaptations have been hit or miss, with the one-off Resident Evil and an ongoing BioShock movie in the works.
The Persona series kicked off in 1996 with the original Persona for PlayStation. As a spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series, it has produced four mainline sequels and numerous spinoffs and rereleases. The latest main entry, Persona 5, debuted in 2016, and Persona 6 was announced in early June, though it currently lacks a release date.
The Persona concept is certainly well-suited for adaptation. The games typically follow a group of Japanese high school students who juggle their everyday lives with supernatural escapades, utilizing their ability to summon Personas to battle evil forces.
Atlus is also gearing up for the release of a remaster of 2008’s Persona 4, titled Persona 4: Revival, which is set to launch on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
Stay tuned, fellow Persona fans; this could be the adventure we’ve been waiting for!
