Masters of Albion, set to enter Early Access on April 22, has just dropped its first gameplay trailer, and it feels familiar. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; the game channels the spirit of director Peter Molyneux’s most celebrated works.

It combines elements from his classic god game, the isometric Populous from 1989, and the witty British fantasy RPG Fable from 2004. Molyneux describes Masters of Albion in a press release as “a true God game,” and given its setting in a world reminiscent of Fable, it’s no surprise. You can catch a glimpse in the nearly seven-minute gameplay trailer below.

The trailer highlights how players can manipulate every aspect of their miniature realm, from constructing buildings to crafting dessert recipes, and even influencing the minds of heroes through a touch of benign possession. You take on the role of what the characters refer to as a “big hand,” a wiggling, disembodied godly hand with an armored wrist, and it looks like there’s plenty of magical action involved.

According to the press release, “From constructing buildings and designing armor to solving quests and battling the chaos of night, the experience of playing Masters of Albion feels tangible and fully realized.” Molyneux emphasizes, “This is where the game truly comes alive.”

“Seeing all of these systems working together – building, crafting, exploration, and conflict – finally delivers the feeling of power, creativity, and responsibility,” he concludes.

Fable’s lead, Peter Molyneux, acknowledges, “I did overpromise on things,” and while he hesitates to label his next game as “great,” he believes that the upcoming city builder Masters of Albion represents “a redemption title for me.”
