The concept for Fable 4 was in development as Peter Molyneux was departing from Lionhead Studios, but it seems the project never truly took flight internally.

Molyneux shared insights about the Fable 4 that could have been during a discussion, reflecting on his emotional response to the recent announcement of the next Fable, which had long been speculated to be a direct sequel.

“We did have a proposition for Fable 4,” Molyneux revealed. “The idea was to explore time a bit more, pushing the narrative further along the natural evolution of the Fable series, which was designed to span generations.”

He added, “We had a pitch document that was proposed at the time, but that coincided with my departure from Lionhead, so I wasn’t involved in its full development.”

Molyneux has previously shared his vision for what Fable 4 could have entailed—if Xbox hadn’t redirected the studio towards Fable Legends, which ultimately led to its closure—though the existence of a pitch document at Lionhead was new information.

In 2019, we highlighted an unreleased 2014 interview where Molyneux described a “steampunk Victoriana” concept for Fable 4.

“The long story for Fable, when we first discussed it at Lionhead, was to take players from an earlier Albion to 500 years later, eventually reaching the modern era,” he explained.

“There was a whole sequence of concept art depicting a Fable set in a steampunk Victoriana age,” Molyneux noted, emphasizing that while it “wasn’t fully realized during my time there,” the team had seriously explored the idea.

“It would have been Fable 4,” Molyneux confirmed. “It would have been fascinating to create, focusing on the journey of becoming famous and a hero in a world that had evolved. It would have been interesting, indeed.”

The new developer, Playground, has “unearthed a treasure trove of documents” from the original Lionhead team that had been stored away, with one document encapsulating the entire series in just five words.
